Well Woman Exam

A well woman exam is an important part of preventive care and essential to maintaining and improving a woman’s health.

Importance of Well Woman Exams

Serious diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers are preventable and can be avoided, minimized or improved with routine screenings, healthy living and doctor’s visits.

What is a Well Woman Exam?

The four major parts of a well woman exam include:

  • Physical Examination. This includes measuring height, weight, and body mass as well as taking blood pressure and performing a breast exam.
  • Pelvic Examination. The doctor will examine the outer genitalia and use a speculum and palpitation to assess the inner parts of the reproductive system. A Pap test may be performed to screen for pre-cancerous cells in the cervix. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women have a pelvic exam performed once a year, the first one being at age 21 or within 3 years of the onset of sexual activity, whichever comes first.
  • Laboratory Tests. Blood, urine and sexually transmitted disease screenings may also be performed.
  • General Health and Lifestyle. Your doctor may ask you questions about your eating and exercise habits, and may counsel you on alcohol, tobacco or drug use. This is also an opportunity to discuss any physical, mental, or emotional issues you may be experiencing so that your doctor can take the appropriate steps to treat them.

Hormonal Balance

Hormone balance is vital for midlife women and is required for optimal health and wellbeing. Typical client concerns at DeRosa Medical include hot flashes, low energy, and an inability to sleep through the night, weight gain, loss of sex drive and memory loss. DeRosa Medical takes a comprehensive approach to our clients’ health, providing guidance for all aspects of hormonal deficiency (estrogen and testosterone) to ensure proper replacement with bio-identical hormones.

Bio-Identical hormones come from natural, plant-derived compounds that have the same molecular structure as those made by the human body. Unlike synthetics, our bodies can readily recognize and metabolize them.

There are many forms of bio-identical hormones including pills, creams, gels and pellets. After discussing your health background, and your lifestyle needs, your provider will help you decide what forms of replacement will be best suited for you.

Birth Control Consultations

DeRosa Medical offers consultation and prescriptions for birth control. There are many options available and some may fit your lifestyle better than others. There are many hormonal and non-hormonal options available which include the pill, patch, injection and IUDs. Our providers can help you decide the best method for you.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Counseling and Treatment

DeRosa Medical offers professional personalized risk assessment, counseling and support, testing and treatment in a confidential setting. Services include screening and treatment for Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Trichomoniasis, Hepatitis and HIV. If required, we will provide you with appropriate referrals to best manage the outcomes of such testing.

Screening and Immunization for HPV (Gardasil)

Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix (the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina). Unlike other cancers, cervical cancer is not hereditary. It’s caused by certain types of a virus, human papillomavirus (HPV).When a woman becomes infected with one of these types of HPV, and the virus doesn’t go away on its own, abnormal cells can develop in the lining of the cervix.

If these cells are not found early enough, pre-cancers and then cancer can develop. Vaccination with GARDASIL is important, but it does not replace routine cervical cancer screenings. Pap tests look for abnormal cervical cells in the lining of the cervix before they have a chance to become pre-cancerous and then cervical cancer. Most often this change takes a number of years. But in rare cases it can happen within a year.

At DeRosa Medical, we ensure that all women have regular screenings for cervical cancer and provide information, counseling and treatment related to immunization with Gardasil.

  2. Physical Exam
  3. DXA screening
  4. Secondary Evaluation of Risk Factors including blood work
  5. Risk Factor and Life Style Modification
  6. Treatment and Management of High Risk Patients

Premenstrual Therapy

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has a wide variety of symptoms, including mood swings, tender breasts, food cravings, fatigue, irritability and depression. An estimated 3 of every 4 menstruating women experience some form of premenstrual syndrome. These problems tend to peak in your late 20s or early 30s.

Symptoms tend to recur in a predictable pattern. Yet the physical and emotional changes you experience with premenstrual syndrome may be particularly intense in some months and only slightly noticeable in others.

You don’t have to let these problems control your life. Treatments and lifestyle adjustments can help you reduce or manage the signs and symptoms of premenstrual syndrome

DeRosa Medical offers consultation, evaluation and treatment of Premenstrual Syndrome. There are many options available and some may fit your lifestyle better than others. We can help you decide which method is best for you.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is the most common endocrine cause of infertility and serious weight gain in young women. It affects millions—experts estimate that about 6 to 10 percent of reproductive age women struggle with this devastating metabolic imbalance. The health risks are overwhelming—from increased risk of teenaged diabetes to young mothers with heart attacks or strokes, and early onset of breast and uterine cancers. Early treatment is the key to preventing serious health risks, but most sufferers don’t even know they have PCOS. Women need a practical guide to help them understand the disorder, know what tests to ask for, what the tests mean, what treatments are available, and how to take a step by step approach to healthy hormone balance, sound meal plans, exercise, and stress management.

At DeRosa Medical, we provide a holistic approach to evaluating and treating women with PCOS. In addition, if a referral is needed for infertility treatments we will work with you to find the best specialist as well as coordinate care to ensure the best possible outcome.
